How Skin Peels Can Improve Your Skin

Skin peels can help.

If you haven’t heard of a skin peel before, or if it sounds like a scary concept, this article will set your mind at ease. I’ll share some basic information about what skin peels are, how they work and the benefits of using this safe and effective skin treatment.

What are Skin Peels?

A skin peel is a procedure where a chemical is applied onto the skin to remove dead skin cells, treat skin concerns and improve the skin’s appearance & texture. It can be used to maintain youthful, glowing and clear skin or to treat a variety of common skin concerns:

  • Pigmentation & dark marks
  • Acne & breakout
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Removes dead skin cells
  • Strengthens collagen & elastin
  • Improves scarring including pitted scars
  • Improve firmness of your skin
  • Improve the texture of your skin
  • Improves the overall appearance of your skin
  • Some peels give your skin a radiant glow
How Do They Work?

There are several different types of skin peels but, to keep it simple, let’s focus on superficial peels, also known as lunch time peels.

These peels are performed by trained skincare therapists, have no recovery time & are very safe for all skin types. They are usually derived from water soluble fruit acids known as Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) or Beta Hydroxy Acids (BHAs) which are lipid based (oil loving).

AHAs work on the outer most layer of your skin known as the dead skin cell layer and have a great exfoliating effect. They are very beneficial for the treatment of fine lines, dry and dehydrated skin, pigment irregularities and acne.

BHAs, such as salicylic acid, are very similar to AHAs but are lipid soluble ie. fat soluble. This allows the peel to penetrate into the skin through the sebaceous follicles, making it an excellent treatment for oily skin, inflammation, pimples & acne.

Each Acid provides its own benefits to the skin. Depending on your skin concern you should always look for a peel containing more than one acid. Here are a few commonly used acids and their effects:

Citric Acid
Citric acid is an alpha hydroxyl acid derived from plants. It improves the texture of skin, lightens skin tone, reduces blemishes and removes dead skin cells. Citric acid also contains antioxidants that help repair skin and fortify blood vessels.

Gluconic Acid
This acid has an anti-bacterial and anti-Inflammatory effect.

Glycolic Acid
Treats fine lines, acne, blackheads, dullness, oiliness and uneven texture. Dead skin cells are sloughed off revealing smoother, brighter, younger looking skin.

Latic Acid
Reduces acne breakouts and improves fine lines and wrinkles.

Malic Acid
This is an AHA extracted from apples. AHAs are typically used to treat dry skin, moisturise skin, and remove dead skin cells. It also supports collagen production and elasticity and decreases pigmentation.

Salicylic Acid
Removes dead skin cells and has an anti-acne effect.

Tartaric Acid
Naturally found in grapes and bananas, it enhances the skin’s natural glow and has a detoxifying effect on the skin.

If you are considering a skin peel the first step should be a consultation, then a patch test. Ensure that you ask about the ingredients of the peel.
